This concept travel companion was born from a simple question: 

how might technology help us to feel grounded and present in an environment that is highly controlled and often overwhelming?

 It is a palm-sized device that draws on a traveller’s schedule, patterns of movement, live airport data, and the nearby environment to deliver soft, wayfinding guidance.

Embedded with anticipatory and geospatial intelligence, NEMA’s subtle, colour-changing states help travellers to register transitions or changes to their journeys. The colour system takes inspiration from natural phenomena that communicate through light and rhythm—bioluminescent creatures, tidal cycles, and moonlit landscapes—with each hue corresponding to a different state of experience.

NEMA is a speculative wayfinding device for travellers that imagines a softer, more intuitive approach to technology.

Airports often value efficiency over experience, treating orientation as a series of tasks rather than a process shaped by timing, perception, and emotion. This efficiency-driven approach is a frequent pain point for travellers, who view travel as an increasingly stressful experience.

We wanted to explore how design might create space for awareness in environments that have traditionally felt compressed and reactive. The resulting device is speculative and does not exist as a functional product. Instead, it offers a framework to consider new approaches to guidance and tech interfaces within airports.

This concept device remains minimal and visually quiet. Attached to a bag or worn on the body, it responds seamlessly to the flow of the journey, communicating through cues that feel both familiar and otherworldly. NEMA’s companion app allows for deeper customisation or navigational insights.

The project invites reflection on how future systems might move with people instead of directing them, shaping travel as a continuous relationship between perception, rhythm, and space.
